Strings Under the Big Sky

Historical Notes

The unique strings event at Big Sky in July has not always been called "Strings Under the Big Sky," nor was it always an annual happening before 2005.

Starting in 1990, the Muir String Quartet began annual visits to Bozeman, initiating "a festival of chamber music performance of international caliber in the Gallatin Valley," called the Montana Chamber Music Festival.  That year the quartet played at the SAE House in Bozeman and at the Gallatin Gateway Inn.

Members of the Muir Quartet (in residence at Boston University since 1983) have returned to Montana each July since 1990, performing in various other venues in Bozeman such as Reynolds Hall (MSU) and the Museum of the Rockies, and in other Montana locations including Billings, Dillon, Livingston, and Georgetown Lake.

In 1997, wishing to take advantage of this world-class talent in such close proximity, the Big Sky Association for the Arts brought these fabulous musicians to Big Sky for the very first time!  Undaunted by cool weather under the big white pavilion in the Big Sky Park, these musicians performed valiantly not only that memorable night, but returned to the same location two years later in 1999.  Cookies and punch were served.

Again appearing in 2001, this time at the Big Sky Chapel, the chamber musicians were warmly received at this fundraiser for Classics for Kids Foundation.  A warm venue was a definite plus, as was the chapel piano.

The desire for a yearly concert at Big Sky began to take hold, when music and dinner were combined for the first time in 2005 at the Rainbow Ranch, with an additional musical element furnished by the rippling of the Gallatin River outside the tent.

Continuing the dinner concert format, chamber music for the next three years (2006-2008) was heard in the patio of the Silvermans' South Fork Lodge, where the outdoor venue allowed avian accompaniment to the strings, for additional musical magic.

The now yearly chamber concerts were given a name in 2008--Strings Under the Big Sky--and funds were raised that year for music instruments for Ophir School children.

The Gallatin River Gallery was host in 2009, and again the students at Ophir and Lone Peak High School were the beneficiaries, the funds being used for a variety of music education accessories.

In the following three years, July in Big Sky meant chamber music with dinner in various memorable locations:  the Talus Room of the Summit Hotel at Big Sky Resort, the Clubhouse at the Club at Spanish Peaks, and, once again, the Rainbow Ranch Pavilion by the Gallatin River.  The chamber music concert in 2010 raised funds for music instruction for Ophir students, and 2011 kicked off the fundraising for the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center at Ophir and Lone Peak Schools.  The final fundraising event in 2012 "completed that vision."  Altogether the Strings Under the Big Sky events raised more than $60,000 to support the arts at Ophir and Lone Peak High School.

In 2013, we "Celebrated Our (fundraising) Success" with the annual dinner concert, and 2016 completed five consecutive years at the Rainbow Ranch, all with chamber music featuring the world-class artists of the Muir String Quartet and their renowned guests. Big Sky has enjoyed fifteen performances of their music!

Our 2017 event featured a plated dinner and the usual fabulous chamber music by the musicians of the Muir String Quartet and was such a success that we will be returning to this new venue, the 320 Ranch Banquet Hall. We hope you can join us on Friday, July 13, 2018!
